PNV: 'Tis the Season - News Chatting on PlanningNewsVote.COM

More reasons to login and vote

A small gift from PlanningNewsVote (PNV)- browser-based group chatting with website visitors. And it supports smileys!

We just think that it makes a lot of sense to allow our users/editors, who share a common interest in planning, to network more freely.

Blogging is passe, subscribe to our channel!

So starting 2008, we will test this service across corporate and government firewalls for network compatibility issues. In our initial testings, we found no browser-related problems.

Just remember to login. Also, anytime you leave the webpage, your chat session will be renewed.

So what's your news?

Hoping to see you @ http://www.PlanningNewsVote.com/ .

Cyburbia: Planning Site of the Day

We are grateful to be Cyburbia's Planning Site of the Day. As its founder Dan Tasman, AICP, put it: "Planning News Vote ...combines social bookmarking, blogging and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control" - we could not have said it any better.

Thanks again to Cyburbia for helping us spread the word.

PNV: A Month Old

A month back, we soft-launched PNV: PNV is a social-bookmarking website where planners can share and discover planning news. Thanks to our users/editors , what is becoming a clear advantage is our diversity of news topics:

As Jane Jacobs might have put it, the users/editors are "the eyes on the digital street".

And thanks to all the bloggers and websites for helping us spread the word- Cuyahoga County Planning Commission Weblog, Planetizen, Cyburbia, spatiallink_org et al.

PNV: Social-bookmarking of Planning News

Earlier this month, we had a soft-launch of Planning News Vote (PNV): PNV is a social-bookmarking website where planners can share and discover news webpages.

With so many news websites and feeds, what news is more relevant to the planning community? Well, now you can find out by participating at PNV where planning news is organized by community votes. We are hoping that this service proves useful to our planning community.

As with so many social-networking websites, PNV's success primarily depends on ease-of-use and word-of-mouth. We think that we have the first in the bag, and are largely counting on viral-marketing for the second.

PNV: Social Networking for Planners

As you can see from the screenshot above, our vote-based approach would help find out what is more important to our planning community by collectively ranking relevant planning news.

We are hoping you can help us spread the word through your email, blog, podcast, website or newsletter.

PNV: Social-networking Websites and Community Access to Information

How much do social-networking websites further the cause of better community access to information, atleast among the large connected communities? And how much do they hurt that cause by mis-framing the issues? What about deliberate obfuscations through information-overload?

We think that at the end, the websites contribute positively by bridging the information-gaps and making the uncertain familiar. That is also why our vote-based approach to planning news is important. Anthony Williams of 'Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything' seems to agree.
